Bernard Durin: Illustrations Made with Passion and Precision

Bernard Durin was born in 1940 and passed away in 1988. He was a designer and  illustrator.  He was extremely fascinated by insects, mainly beetles.

His  interest with insects come up after a traveling in Provence, France in the summer of 1975. In total he created 60 portraits of insects. Most of these insects he found during his walks in the Saint-Baume mountains. Other exotic specimens were provided for him by the Natural History Museum in Paris.

He finished each painting after only about 3 weeks. Durin worked with a magnifying glass and an 00 size watercolor brush. He painted using the pure watercolor technique. Most of his paintings were made on cardboard and a few on vellum. In 1980, Durin published the book Beetles and Other Insects  with all 60 watercolor paintings. All these .
